Understanding Existentialism

As a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor, I Work with an Understanding of Existentialism

As a humanistic integrative counsellor, I draw upon the principles of existentialism to help clients explore and understand the deeper meaning of their experiences. Existentialism emphasizes personal freedom, choice, responsibility, and the search for meaning in an often uncertain world. In my practice, I work with the understanding that we are all individuals who have the power to shape our own lives, regardless of past experiences or current circumstances.

Existential therapy invites clients to confront the fundamental aspects of human existence—such as freedom, isolation, meaning, and mortality. It allows individuals to explore how they relate to these existential themes, which often underlie emotional struggles, anxiety, or feelings of emptiness. In a world where uncertainty and change are constant, existentialism offers a framework to find personal meaning and authenticity.

One of the core ideas of existentialism is the recognition that we are responsible for our own choices and the direction of our lives. Jean-Paul Sartre, a key figure in existential philosophy, famously said:

“Existence precedes essence.”
— Jean-Paul Sartre

This profound quote encapsulates the existential belief that we are not born with a predefined purpose or identity. Rather, we create our own essence through the choices we make and how we engage with the world. In therapy, I help clients understand that they are not bound by societal expectations, inherited roles, or past mistakes. Instead, they have the freedom to define their own path and create meaning in their lives, even in the face of challenges.

Through this humanistic approach, I support clients in embracing their freedom to make authentic choices, despite the uncertainties that life may present. We explore existential themes together, such as the search for personal meaning, dealing with the anxiety of freedom, accepting responsibility for choices, and facing life’s inevitable uncertainties. My aim is to empower clients to live more fully and authentically, to recognize their own capacity for growth, and to find meaningful ways to engage with their world and relationships.
